A garden, like children, requires patient labor and attention. Plants and children do not grow merely to satisfy ambitions or to fulfill good intentions. They thrive because someone expended effort on them. -Liberty H. Bailey
Each center gifted Sr. Julia with cards, 80 oz. of one of her favorite snacks & a Cardinal baseball item. We collected memories/reflections and put them in a book… so if you have a memory/reflection/wish you want to share, please send it along… she’s celebrating all year! We are counting our blessings daily for her loving service, expert leadership & sage wisdom.
One of the most beloved musicals of all time is The Sound of Music. Picture Julie Andrews and fellow actors in the roles of Maria and the Von Trap children. Now picture Sister Brenda and the children of Hope and Harmony singing the Sound of Music favorite, "My Favorite things."  Here's OUR list of favorite things.....
The recent Harvard Study that looked at earning power over a 30 year period for people born into poverty was very sobering. At Griffin Center we know how difficult it is for our children to overcome the odds and break the cycle of generational poverty. Our mission is to change that statistic. Our programs of educational support and social/emotional growth are intended to help children reach their full potential and develop into happy, healthy, self-supporting, productive citizens.
We believe in our children's ability to succeed in breaking the cycle of generational poverty. In order to do that they need advocates to challenge the systems that have failed them for so long. It is our hope for their futures...a hope that in the words of St. Augustine has "two beautiful daughters - anger and courage: anger that sees things the way they are and courage to make things the way they ought to be" This hope compels us to continually challenge the school district and other social systems that are failing the poor and disadvantaged.
Griffin Center's performing group, Hope and Harmony, under the direction of our Arts and Enrichment Coordinator, Sr. Brenda Fritz D.C., will be sharing the gift of music and dance at the Sarah Community. The group of 20 young people from our DeShields-Robinson site have had several performances to rave reviews. They work hard to bring the joy of God's love through their songs, choreography and beautiful smiles. If you need entertainment for an event in our area...give us a call!
